Henderson-based Quertle Wins
National Library of Medicine Award


The National Institues of Health annouced that Henderson-based Quertle is one of five winners of the National Library of Medicine's first software development challange.

Congratulations to Jeff Saffer, Ph.D. and Vicki Burnett, Ph.D. who led the effort to create Quertle.  Quertle is an innovative website for searching and investigating the biomedica

l literature. It is geared to active life science professionals, including researchers and health care providers, and is designed to save them considerable time and effort in finding the literature they need. Quertle simultaneously searches multiple sources of life science literature, including the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE and TOXLINE.

Dr. Ron Gary: Examines cellular responses to DNA damage His research on DNA damage will have cancer applications.


Dr. Carl Reiber: Studying the physiology of shrimp  His research will improve Cardiovascular functions.


Dr. Brian Hedlund: Nevada Hotsprings Bacteria Research.  Hedlund's research on bacteria has resulting in promising industrial enzymes for the use in biomass applications.


Dr. David Lee, Biomechanics: Applying biomechanics to create robotic equipment with application for human prosthetics and the repair of knee and ankle joints.

Dr. Clemens Heske: Studies Hydrogen Feul Applications.  Heske is in charge of a large DOE-funded hydrogen fuel project.

Dr. Chulsung Bae: Fuel Cell Experiments.  Dr. Bae experiments with energy storage and fuel cell membrances for hydrogen cars.



Southern Nevada Research



CardioVascular BioTherapeutics:  Uses proteins to regenerate blood vessels, skin and other tissues. It has a heart drug and a wound healing drug in clinical trials.




Nevada cancer Institute:  In 2010Nevada Cancer Institute was awarded grants to study how melanoma spreads to distant organs in the body. John Ruckdeschel, MD, President.



The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health: Focuses on research, early detection and treatment of neurological diseases. Jeff Cummings, MD, President.

Varian Medical Systems:  Varian Medical Systems focuses energy on saving lives. By partnering with customers and others, the people of Varian develop leading solutions for advancing cancer treatment, radiosurgery, X-ray imaging, and security.



R&D Abs:  Awarded a $2.6 million NIH grant in 2010 to fund a clinical study designed to obtain FDA marketing clearance for a new in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) test that forecasts the onset of the sepsis pathology. Bob Webber, PhD, President.
